D-DAY

The property is located in bocage country, on the Cotentin Peninsula, in the heart of the parachutists drop-zone not far from Sainte-Mere-Eglise, the principle target for the American forces on D Day. The battle for this town features in the seminal war film “The Longest Day”. There are many cafes, military shops and a dedicated war museum honouring the town’s history, which commemorates liberation day every June.

Located in the nearby village of Picauville, La Chevalerie was one of the first place to be liberated by the Allied Forces following the Normandy Landings. There are two war memorials within walking distance, honouring the American soldiers who died there.

It’s a short drive to several iconic D-Day landmarks, including Utah Beach with its D Day Landing Museum, and Omaha Beach, with the famous American Cemetery. There is also the overlooked German Cemetery en route to Omaha and worth a visit.

We are happy to provide recommendations for the best private tours in the area, where you can learn about the campaign by jeep, bus or on foot.

There is a further link with the house to D Day, as the owner’s grandfather, Sir John D’Albiac Air Marshall, was Commander of the Tactical Air Force during the Second World War and played a vital part in the planning of Operation Overlord in 1943. His war diaries and archive are available on request.
